The Ultimate Switcher for Redundancy in Professional Playback Systems
The Radial SW8 MK2 is an 8 channel auto switcher that facilitates switching between two playback systems automatically. In professional applications such as live broadcasts and concerts, it is used primarily to set up a redundant back up system, and allow for seamless switching should the main playback source fail. The SW8 MK2 is the switcher of choice for engineers of artists such as Radiohead, Lady Gaga, Madonna, U2 and events run by Cirque Du Soleil and American Idol.
A Redundancy Set Up for Live Performance
The SW8 MK2 is specifically designed for use with redundancy set ups, where two identical audio sources such as multi track recorders, computers, or network systems are synced, with one going "live", whilst the second is the "redundant" back up. The SW8 MK2 has noiseless automatic switching to the redundant unit should there be a glitch with the main one, utilising the in built "gate" function that detects issues, triggers an "alarm" and conducts the switch without any pause in the show.
Multiple Switching Options including Mute and Standby
Apart from the automatic function, the SW8 MK2 has other modes of switching available to suit the engineer and the situation. There is a front panel A-B switch to allow manual switching, a Footswitch option should the operator's hands be busy working at the desk, or a dedicated latching switch can be attached. Furthermore, an SMTPE time code can be set up and used to as an audio source and feeding into the auto-gate section. The SW8 MK2 also has a standby function and a mute switch should the operator need to pause, cue or cut playback audio.
Linking Multiple Units
The SW8 MK2 as a stand alone unit can accommodate up to 8 tracks of audio. If you require more, then it is an easy task to link multiple SW8 MK2 units together to create 16, 24 or 32 track systems. Using the JR2 link function, multiple units can be linked with a TRS cable, where the first SW8 MK2 in line will act as the master, and the extra units at the slave. Therefore, any switching conducted on the main unit, either manual or automatically will be carried across all units, permitting smooth, and total control over all playback tracks.
Connecting and Splitting from the SW8 MK2 MK2
It is imperative that the PA system or live audio feed is muted at the master prior to connecting the SW8 MK2. Radial have provided multiple options for connecting the SW8 MK2 to accommodate almost all scenarios. On the rear panel, there is a choice of 25 pin D-Sub inputs, and 2 sets of 8 1/4" inch TRS Jack input connectors. Output wise, the operator can use either the 8 XLR outputs on the front panel, or a straight-wired 25 pin D-Sub on the rear. The isolated XLR outputs are commonly used on-stage as they provide a convenient way to split the signal for independent monitor and Front of House mix control.
Compact, Rack Mountable and Easy to Transport
With so many top of the line touring artists and engineers using the SW8 MK2, the unit needs to be durable and easy to travel. As it is constructed out of 14-guage steel, is 19"rack Mountable and only takes up 1RU of space, the SW8 MK2 is certainly strong and compact enough to carry multiple units in a flyable rack case. And, if your show relies on playback, then an extra 3RU rack case in the luggage to prevent any interruption is worth every cent.
