Ever tried to set up a PA system with microphones outside? At times the elements can be an engineer's greatest foe, an ocean breeze is not so soothing when heard through an SM58! To combat this problem, a Wind Shield can be used. A Wind Shield, usually made from a foam or fibre, works in a similar way to a Pop Filter, diffusing the ability of the wind to vibrate the diaphragm of the microphone and cause unwanted noise (usually sounds low and rumbly). Whether using instrument mics at an outdoor festival or wireless speech mics at a wedding or conference, having windshields in the drawers case can be a lifesaver!
