Not what it seems?
By: Anonymous on 8 June 2022Follow up review. My musician friend came to town and is staying. He listened to and liked the mic enough to arrange a meeting at a pro studio to test it. ISK's published frequency response graphs are nonsense. The spectrograph indicates an unhandled DC issue in the lowest frequencies. Can be filtered out. There is also more brightness in the higher end. What was interesting is that compared to the Neuman U87, the mid frequencies are very similar. The engineer was not completely dismissive of this mic. We saw a dozen original Neumans dating from the early 1960s. The standard was pretty high. But as an experienced engineer he wasn't excited about the ISK(s) either. More like grudging respect. He suggested looking at Aston (UK) mics for value to performance. To my ears the ISK18 stood up well in A/B testing against a genuine Neuman U87. (We also A/B tested the Isk T3000. The RM18 was the most similar. The T3000 is very good but has a sharp cut at 6500 and peak at 7000 that makes it seem more high end for vocals than it is. The RM18 doesn't have that mid high peak but extends further than the T3000. I'm keen to try an ISK U87Pro. Please Swamp bring this in. In the meantime, I'll be happy with the RM18.

A pleasing warm, rich tone from the Isk RM18
By: Anonymous on 28 May 2022I have been collecting cheapish microphones and have several from Isk, Alctron and Synco. Many cheap mics have great specs but but lack a pleasing character. The closest comparison would be the Isk T3000 which is very clean and accurate but seems slightly sterile and lacks warmth or richness. I bought an Art Tube Preamp to try to warm the T3000. If Swamp were still selling the Isk TRM11 Mk2 tube mic I'd have bought one of those. The RM18 looks very similar on specs to the T3000 but sounds better for vocal than the T3000 (even with tube preamp). The RM18 doesn't need the tube preamp. I don't have a BM600 or BM700 to compare but my daughter has an Isk BM800 which she loves and says it is warmer than the T3000 but doesn't have the richness of the RM18. So if you like or can ignore the bling look of this microphone, then I'd recommend it.
