Wow, best modeler out there for that price...
By: Zig on 22 March 2024I've owned a bunch of amps from valve combos to valve heads, quad boxes and various studio equipment. I currently own the Hotone Ampero and the Valeton GP-200. I know what a valve amp sounds like and feels like in terms of dynamics, attack, sustain and all the goodness that a driven valve amp will give you. Until a few years ago, modelers sounded OK. In a recording mix, they would sound like a real amp. Unfortunately, for the musician playing through them, they did not respond like a valve amp. So, as technology got better in reproducing the amp sound, it still failed in the 'feel' department. The Ampero II succeeds where the Ampero, Valeton, Boss and other modelers failed. Although Boss kind of had the feel of valve saturation, it was bloody noisy - and the amp selection was bad. The Helix is OK but overpriced. Also, it adds artificial crispiness to the sound. Axe FX? Who can afford it? After scouring a bunch of modelers, some YouTubers suggested in error that you don't need to upgrade from the Ampero to Ampero II. I STRONGLY DISAGREE! Ampero II has superior effects than the Ampero. But most of all, Ampero II has a power amp module that you can combine with pre-amp modules. You can change the virtual valves, the sag and other typical valve responses. In comparison to my valve amps, the new amps, preamps and the power amp module pushes Ampero II into the valve amp region. Finally, a company that gets it. Guitar players can now dial-in a particular valve sound but that also feels like a valve amp when playing. Also, the amp models are surprisingly quiet and you might not need a noise gate. The speaker cabs, microphone placement etc give the Ampero II an additional edge over the previous Ampero and other modelers out there. Seriously, I can now dial in any sound and go nuts on the guitar because the unit reacts (almost) like a real valve amp. I am at a loss why no one has highlighted the valve saturation, sag and other amazing improvements. I now have two Amperos. I'll be selling the previous model and keeping Ampero II because there is a real improvement in the sound and feel of the amps.
