For many guitarists, the analog version of a delay pedal is a must to purchase first. Often, they can be better sounding than the digital counterpart, and can have quite a unique tonal character. The repeats of analog delays tend to be warmer, sometimes darker, and can break up per cycle, which tonally can be a great musical choice due to their unique tone. Some guitarists say that the analog delay cycles are more musical and pleasing to the ear.

Analog pedals do usually have a shorter maximum delay time due to the use of chips and capacitors than digital DSP delay pedals. However, many of us guitarists tend to use both analog and digital delays on the same pedalboard - why not have the best of both worlds!
